The Annual Profections Series: My 2H Profection Year

Hello friends, welcome back to the series! As I’m navigating my 3H year, I’ve had some time to reflect on my 2H year with a fresh, and more distant, perspective. Given that a lot has happened since my 1H Profection Year article, I’ll just be covering a portion of those events that best illustrate the second house’s activation by profection for my chart specifically. If you’re wanting a refresher on how profection houses work, you can always look to my first article here, where I break it down step by step.

Annual profections for an Aquarius rising.

Since I’m an Aquarius rising my second house would be in Pisces, meaning that the planet ruling over the profection year (time lord) is the benevolent Jupiter! My domicile Jupiter is also located in the 2H, copresent my Moon, Lot of Eros, and South Node. With Jupiter’s domicile being both Pisces AND Sagittarius, this means that my 11H will also be activated during this solar year. As Kira Ryberg mentions in her exaltation lecture, if we look to the sign of exaltation for Jupiter, we can also get some extra information regarding prominent themes throughout the year; especially regarding what helps to “elevate” circumstances. In this case it’s the 6H containing my Lot of Fortune, which isn’t so bad given that it can witness its ruler Luna, and is being bonified by Jove via trine. Without further ado, let’s get right into it!

I’ve always been under the impression that the 2H is somewhat elusive, especially being named the “Gate of Hades.” With the 2H being associated with things like one’s income, morals/values, and resources, it’s interesting to consider the name of this particular house and what it implies. Having really contemplated this question for the past couple of months, I’ve come to the conclusion that the name implies the native needing to make “judgements” in this house; funnily enough the Judgement card in tarot is associated with the planet Pluto, aka Hades.

It makes sense that after the 1H where we develop a stronger sense of the “self,” we move onto our judgements and how reliable they are in this new phase of personhood. Who we are (1H) inevitably trickles down into what we hold to be valuable and how we choose to sustain ourselves on a mundane level; something that the 2H can give us insight into. This is definitely the year to ask yourself “What do I stand for?” “What does xyz say about me?” “What do I deem important and/or a top priority?” “What do I need to survive?” Expect to be met with moral dilemmas, which may challenge you, but will also help you find answers to these 2H questions. Before we get into the astrology of it, let’s take a look at Hades within Greek mythology.

The King of the Underworld

In Greek Mythology, Hades of known as the God of the dead and King of the Underworld. He is the older brother of Zeus and Poseidon, and the infamous partner (and kidnapper) of Persephone. He also has three older sisters: Hera, Demeter and Hestia. When Hades and his brothers defeated Kronos and the rest of the Titans, the three brothers divided rulership by drawing lots: Zeus rules the sky, Poseidon the sea, and Hades in turn received the underworld. Depictions of Hades often show him holding a bident (two-pronged pitchfork) and being accompanied by a three-headed dog known as Ceberus (aka the Hound of Hades).

The Greek God Hades, Lord of the Underworld

Though we might have the impression that Hades is a cruel and evil deity, it’s important to note that he was often portrayed as being rather altruistic in nature. This can be seen with myths such as the myth of Orpheus, and the myth of Sisyphus. More often than not, the punishment Hades allotted to his subjects, fit the crime regarding their actions on Earth. Though Hades’s job isn’t particularly uplifting, he was still tasked with dealing with the souls in the underworld, and saw that those obligations were met; rarely ever occupying himself with the events of the living world. Even with the infamous and heavily debated myth about Persephone, Hades actually got Zeus’s blessing to kidnap Persephone prior to snatching her up; it wasn’t something done impulsively, nor was it done behind the back of his brother. Hades might not be a happy-go-lucky deity, but to pass him off as some evil guy, isn’t a fair assessment either.

What’s particularly fascinating about the Hades, is that ancient Greeks often attributed him to the riches or treasures that were beneath Earth’s surface; some ancients have even referred to the god as being a “Bringer of Wealth,” though you don’t see much of Hades from this time period, as many were scared to even utter his name. When you take this into consideration, it actually makes a lot of sense that Hades’s name would appear when discussing the 2H, as it specifically makes reference to the gates of Hades, meaning just before leaving the earthly/living realm. This would technically be where we would find precious rocks and minerals, which is quite ironic considering the fact that once you pass the threshold into the underworld, you can’t take your earthly possessions with you.

The complexity of Hades from a mythological and spiritual point of view, really helps us to understand just how complex the 2H is. It might also help us to partially understand why there aren’t many texts thoroughly addressing the 2H; Hades wasn’t a guy you talked about if you didn’t want to welcome him into your space, so it’s not surprising that the ancients seemingly left this house alone with their delineations. When discussing the 2H, Valens says “in this Place the benefics do no good, the malefics make men sluggish and injured, unable to wade through their lives to the end” (Valens, 30). Though this might be discouraging to read if you’re like me and have planets in this house, once you consider the social consensus regarding Hades in Ancient Greece, it starts to make a bit more sense.

The Main Events of my Profection Year

Now, I wish that I could say that my profection year was as Jovial as my time lord would have you believe, but actually it was pretty rough in certain aspects, which is honestly expected considering the mythology behind this house. Since my 11H is also activated for my 2H profection year, it was actually my friends, and the people that I associate with, that was one of the primary topics for this year; something you definitely wouldn’t expect if you were just looking at the 2H on its own. Very shortly after I entered my 2H year, I started getting into a weird place with my former friend from high school. I was starting my teaching job abroad for the second consecutive school year and had met some new friends, which was definitely lacking in the previous year. Elated that I could finally have people that I could see and relate to on a frequent basis, I obviously wanted to nurture these relationships as much as possible. This however did not please my friend from back home, and aroused feelings of possessiveness and jealousy. They started being passive aggressive with me and were suddenly way less supportive of my endeavours and ambitions.

Despite my best efforts, this friendship came to an end roughly halfway through this profection year. I attribute this to my natal 11H Sag Pluto, as it does square my natal Jupiter by sign, as well as transiting Pisces Saturn being activated by profection. Despite Jupiter’s decent condition, we still have to take into account that malefic influences will mute the Jovial effects of this benevolent planet. Both my profection house and the houses associated with its ruler, had more challenging planets in it, either natally or at the time of my profection year, dulling the effects of Jupiter’s otherwise positive significations.

Another significant occurrence tied to my 2H that occurred during the year, was the fact that I had just entered a serious relationships after a long period of being voluntarily single and celibate. Though you might be thinking “what does a relationship have to do with the 2H,” it actually makes sense given the context. I essentially had to make a judgement call regarding whether or not I would like to start my current relationship, as my 7H Mars has made me extremely wary of relationships (to nobody’s surprise lol.) This relationship needed me to step out of my comfort zone regarding romantic endeavours, and I had to ensure that my sense of self wasn’t compromised by being with someone, which was challenging to confront and unpack. However, I decided to take a leap of faith, and Jupiter was there to catch me, sure enough!

What I found particularly interesting about getting together with my boyfriend, was the fact that my activated house would actually fall into his 7H of partnerships in synastry. My lovely boyfriend would end up being the person who encouraged me to pursue my passions, and was always there to help however he could. Not only that, but we ended up moving in together, which at the time, helped me greatly with saving money that I earned from my job and allowed me to create this website that you’re currently reading this on! With my Moon in the 2H ruling my 6H and conjunct Eros, it’s very important that I receive support from my partner regarding my work and what I find to be valuable in this lifetime; which is exactly what ended up happening, and I couldn’t have been more pleased. Since we’re on the topic of Eros, let’s look a little deeper into the non-romantic side of this lot, and how it manifested during my profection year.

The Lot of Eros speaks to what we desire, and what pains us when it is lacking and/or unattainable; it’s your passions, your pleasures, and what “pulls you in.” With this particular lot being in my 2H of income, it’s safe to say that I really need to be fully enthralled in my work; especially once we consider the conjunction to Luna and her influence on my 6H. My Eros being activated during this profection year made me realize that I need to start laying the groundwork in order to develop my astrological practice into something that I can make a living from. I started looking at masters programs that could help further my understanding of the ancient worlds, and finally took a leap of faith by investing in good astrology software and Chris Brennan’s Hellenistic astrology course. I knew that if I wanted to bring my dreams to reality, I will need to start taking risks and dedicating my time and resources to what leads me in the right direction.

Last but not least, I had Luna activated during this profection year; though my Pisces Moon is one of my dearest and softest placements, she was absolutely going through it this time! What really got me, was Saturn going over my Moon several times while it transited my 2H; I believe they were conjunct at least 4 times with all of the retrogrades. This did not go over well for me, as I was developing pretty bad migraines throughout the year, and it sometimes go in the way of my work (Luna ruling the 6H). What’s more is that I ended up badly hurting my foot right as Saturn started applying to my Moon in early February 2024. This is particularly “impressive” once you consider that the feet are the body part that corresponds to the sign my Moon is in — Pisces. I managed to recover within a few weeks, but I was definitely feeling the phantom pain until Saturn started separating from my Moon in April 2024. Thankfully I had health insurance through my work, and had access to public transit, making this period a little easier for me to handle.

As you can see, my 2H year wasn’t as positive as you might’ve expected a Jupiter year to be, but I think it’s really important to not that I did in fact have a Jupiter-y year; I was constantly met with luck along my path. Whether it was assistance with resources when I wasn’t getting paid at my job, having someone I could trust and rely on, or having a dream that I wanted to materialize, Jupiter was always there to help me get my foot in the door or to help take some of the pressure off of my shoulders. This year definitely taught me the value of good judgement, and being able to feel gratitude when enduring hardships. It also taught me that sometimes you get roadblocks and delays when you need them least, but that doesn’t mean that you’re immediately doomed going forward; you must keep the faith. Maybe Jupiter didn’t give me stacks of cash and success during this profection year, but he definitely guided and protected me through the proverbial storm, which I will never not be thankful for.

If you made it to the end, thank you so much for reading! Since the ancients texts sometimes briefly touch on the 2H in the nativity, I wanted to provide some insight into this house and what we can expect from it in terms of general vibes, and recurring themes. I hope that this article has helped you get a better understanding of the 2H and how topics of this house manifest when it is activated by profection. This is obviously just a small piece of annual profections as a timing technique, so if you’d like to go more in-depth and see how this would play out in your own chart, you can always book a year ahead/solar return consultation with me here!
